Volunteer Services

In 1978, Hospice of the Bluegrass began with a group of volunteers. Today, volunteers remain at the heart of hospice. In 2010 Hospice of the Bluegrass had over 950 volunteers contribute over 34,000 hours of volunteer service.

There is an opportunity for everyone at Hospice of the Bluegrass.

Volunteers work directly with patients:

  • to offer friendship and companionship; emotional support and assistance to patient/family; to provide respite care (free time for caregiver).
  • to shop, run errands, do light housework or other homemaking duties.
  • to provide transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping, etc. for patients and family members.
  • to be an 11th Hour volunteer, who stays with actively dying patients who have no family in the hope that no one will die alone.
  • to provide their professional talents including hair stylist/barber, musician, attorney, clowns/entertainers, massage therapist, etc.
  • to provide bereavement care to family members who are grieving the loss of a loved one through companionship and support programs.

Volunteers work with Hospice staff:

  • to provide administrative/clerical help by assisting with mailings, computer work, filing, and telephones.
  • to assist with fundraising and special events.

Volunteers work with Daniel’s Care:

  • to offer companionship, support and assistance to pediatric patients and their families.
  • to assist with support services offered to grieving children and their families.

Hospice volunteers can give as little or as much time as they wish. Some volunteers donate several hours each week while others commit to a few hours each month. Many Hospice volunteers prefer to offer one-time services on an as needed basis. All volunteers will have the opportunity to schedule a one-on-one interview with the Coordinator of Volunteer Services to discuss their interests and availability. Hospice of the Bluegrass welcomes all levels of commitment and will work hard to meet your needs as a volunteer.
